About this place
Creamy gnocchi is a dish that has made a lasting impression on some diners at fudan. One visitor enjoyed the combination of a light, not-too-rich cream sauce and chewy gnocchi; another described a version with beef shank as rich and full-bodied. The menu changes with the seasons and over time, so part of the appeal is seeing what is on offer when you visit.
The menu moves between Japanese and Western styles. Diners have fondly recalled the ajillo, with its generously sized shrimp, and a corn kakiage fritter. There are also sashimi and roast Kawachi duck from Tsumura Honten. The sashimi is listed in small and large portions, making it an option whether you want to make duck the focus or share several dishes around the table.
For a final savoury course, rice dishes include buri rice, sea bream rice and fresh-fish dashi chazuke. The menu notes that the sea bream rice takes time to prepare, so it may suit a leisurely meal. A salad of seasonal vegetables and fruit comes with wasabi-flavoured dressing and is available in small and large sizes.
The drinks list includes a good selection of sake and wine, with plenty to choose from alongside the food. Sake served at room temperature or warm includes Jujiasahi from Shimane and Ozasa-ya Taketsuru from Hiroshima, among other named labels. For a lighter first drink, try the mikan beer, which combines beer with coarsely puréed mandarin, or a sour made with Naoshichi citrus from Kochi. Desserts include tiramisu, sansho pepper semifreddo and ginger ice cream. It is easy to shape a meal around the food and drinks, then finish with something sweet.
fudan is a dinner option in Minami-Tanabe for solo diners and groups alike, and reservations are available for dinner.
